Professorial Psychiatry Unit for Anxiety and Related Disorders
Introduction
The unit has been operating since April 1996. The unit provides a broader base of patients for clinical teaching for medical students from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, as well as expanding the number and range of patients available for clinical research.
Major Developments
- A unique intensive behavioural program for inpatients has been established.
- The unit offers a detailed inpatient evaluation, second opinion, pharmacological review, investigation and treatment service. This has been utilised by patients from all states of Australia, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
- A registrar position commenced in 1997. Registrars are involved in supervised clinical experience, taking care of individual patients under consultants supervision, assisting consultants, conducting physical examinations and being involved in inpatient and outpatient therapy programs. It is expected they will also have some research training and experience.
- ECT Training Program has been developed, centred at the Albert Road Clinic, with the Professorial Psychiatry Unit group taking a key role. This is a run under the aegis of Australian Postgraduate Medicine and Victorian Medical Postgraduate Foundation as a combined Melbourne University, Monash University, Albert Road Clinic, Melbourne Clinic and state psychiatric services program. This program is now recognised by the Victorian Government Department of Human Services for psychiatrist training in the use of monitored ECT treatments by psychiatrists.
Research
The Academic Professorial Psychiatry Unit is active in clinical research. This includes studies of anxiety and depression and their treatment.
Clinical Services
The unit has been active in the clinical services within the hospital, providing assessment, treatment and second opinion services.
