Dr Marc Seal co-chairs the Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Research Group at the MNC and his research interests involve describing how our environment, genes and development can result in the brain changes and functional deficits observed in schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Dr Seal was recently awarded the three year Ronald Philip Griffith Fellowship from the University of Melbourne to be used for the purpose of research into the causes or alleviation of the mental illness schizophrenia. Currently he is coordinating a series of studies investigating abnormal white matter development in schizophrenia using a range of neuroimaging techniques.
Dr Seal completed and was awarded two prestigious international fellowships, the Wellcome Trust Traveling Award (2001-2003) and a NARSAD Young Investigators Award (2003-2004), to undergo post-doctor training in neuroimaging at the Institute of Psychiatry (IOP), London. He is the Victorian Coordinator of the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank, the largest and most comprehensive study into the causes of schizophrenia ever conducted in Australia.
Dr Seal also has a particular interest in the impact of cannabis us on the developing brain and is currently a Chief Investigator on a NHMRC Program Grant tracking the impact of long term cannabis use. Dr Seal is currently involved in a number of national and international collaborations related to neuroimaging, behaviour and cognition.
