Information Technology and Imaging Laboratory Management

The MNC is a major user of complex computer systems for the storage and analysis of brain images and associated data. The continued growth of the MNC will place greater requirements on the capabilities of the IT environment, particularly in database design and management, and the need to support a growing number of research users.

MNC has a user base of between 25 and 35 users which includes MNC permanent staff, visiting staff, research students and administrative staff. The technical environment is situated across three locations: Sunshine Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and the National Neuroscience Facility at The University of Melbourne. This environment includes;

  • An information technology environment with imaging workstations, database & files servers, and standard desktop computers for office/administrative applications.
  • 12 imaging workstations, 3 fileservers, 30 personal computers/laptops
  •  A capacity of 3 TB of online and 10TB offline storage with a library of approximately 2500 MR images growing at 5-10% p.a.
  • Operating systems (Microsoft OS, including Windows 2000 server and XP Pro), Unix OS (SGI Irix), Linux OS (Debian), Apple Macintosh (OSX),
  • Neuroimaging applications installed and supported directly by MNC: Analyze, MRICRO, FSL, MEDx, iBrain, Freesurfer, Brains2, Matlab, minc, xbamm, Mojo, AIR, SPM2 & nPAIRS.
  • Desktop applications installed supported directly by MNC: Microsoft Office including Access, Endnote, SPSS, MYOB, Microsoft Projects, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
