Human Ethics in the Department of Psychiatry
Overview
Human Ethics at Melbourne University is administered via a three level committee structure.
Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)
The role of the Human Research Ethics Committee is to develop policy, to monitor and review all matters pertaining to human research ethics in the University, and to be responsible for liaison with external organisations, co-ordination of information and education and training of staff and students in human research ethics policy and procedures. It will also act as a committee of appeal against decisions and to hear complaints on projects within its purview.
Human Ethics Sub-Committees (HESC)
There are three discipline-based HESCs:

Health Sciences Human Ethics Sub-Committee (HS-HESC)

Behavioural and Social Sciences Human Ethics Sub-Committee (BSS-HESC)

Humanities and Applied Sciences Human Ethics Sub-Committee (HAPS-HESC)
The Human Ethics Sub-Committees have the responsibility, on behalf of the Human Research Ethics Committee, to ensure that ethical standards are maintained in research projects to protect the interests of the research subjects, the investigator and the institution.
Human Ethics Advisory Group (HEAG)
The role of the HEAG is to provide preliminary assessment, on behalf of the Human Research Ethics Committtee and its Human Ethics Sub-Committees, of human research projects submitted by staff and students in a department, and to advise the HREC and its Sub-Committees on issues pertaining to human research ethics in the department.
